What are the different types of coverage?
Bodily Injury & Property Damage Liability
Bodily Injury and Property Damage Liability covers your legal liability for an accident. This refers to an accident which you are at fault for, it covers injury to another party or damage to someone's property. When purchasing bodily injury and property damage liability, your insurance company is responsible for paying up to the limit of liability you select.
Explanation of limits of coverage – For example, 20/30/15 means:
no more than $20,000 would be paid per person for Bodily Injury
no more than $30,000 would be paid per accident for Bodily Injury
no more than $15,000 would be paid per accident for Property Damage
Comprehensive and Collision
Comprehensive and Collision coverage covers the cost to repair or replace your motorcycle if it is stolen or damaged in an accident, whether it is your fault or another parties fault. When purchasing comprehensive and collision coverage, you would select a deductible for each coverage. If in an accident, you are responsible for paying up to the deductible and the insurance company pays for the remaining damage.
Under Collision Coverage, your insurance company pays for damage to your vehicle if you collide with another vehicle or object.
Under Comprehensive Coverage, your insurance company pays for damage to your vehicle caused by an event other than a collision, vandalism, theft or fire.
Uninsured /Underinsured Motorist
If the party at-fault does not have insurance, Uninsured Motorists will cover damages and bodily injury you incur that the party at-fault is legally liable for, such as medical treatment and lost wages.
If your injury expenses exceed the party at-faults liability limits, you may decide to use Underinsured Motorists Coverage to cover bodily injury for the amount not covered by the at-fault person's insurance.
Purchasing a uninsured/underinsured motorist policy provides you with the piece of mind in knowing that your insurance company will always take care of payments in the event of an accident with someone with an absence or lack of insurance.
Medical Payments
Medical Payments coverage covers the cost of all necessary medical care you receive as a result of a motorcycle accident. Medical Payments coverage can be used whether you or another party is responsible for the accident. This type of coverage can usually only be used for up to three years after the initial accident, and is usually limited to a specific, previously selected dollar amount. In some states, Medical Payments can only be used after all other medical insurance is exhausted.
Custom Parts and Equipment (CPE)
When Physical Damage Liability coverage, also known as Comprehensive or Collision coverage is purchased, usually at least $1,000 of Custom Parts and Equipment (CPE) coverage is included. If you wish to purchase additional CPE coverage, you may do so in the amount be suited for your needs, usually $30,000 is the maximum amount of CPE coverage that can be purchased.
CPE covers devices, equipment, enhancements, accessories and changes (other than those that the manufacturer originally installs) that alter the appearance or performance of the motorcycle. This includes, but is not limited to:
Any electronic equipment, antennas and other devices used exclusively to send or receive audio, visual or data signals or play back recorded media, that are permanently installed on the motorcycle using bolts or brackets
Sidecars
